Monticello Academy Taekwondo Students Return Triumphant
Monticello Academy’s Taekwondo Team was off to UC Davis to compete at the Annual UC Davis Fall Open on Saturday, November 8, 2014. Our MA athletes worked hard in preparation for this event. “We had been working a lot on footwork and speed to incorporate into our matches,” said Ms. Bonacorso, black belt at Monticello Academy. “My personal goal was to use ‘1 in 2 out’ to set up my game and have the opportunity to take the counters and get my points! I had a difficult opponent but I was able to apply my strategy and footwork to throw her off her game and be successful in what my goals were. I felt like I finally had something that we had been working on for a long time,” Ms Bonacorso concluded.
Each of the students had a great deal of learning as a result of their performances. Athletes competed in poomsae (forms), kyorugi (sparring), and freestyle. The UC Open marked the first event of the 2014/2015 season for Monticello Academy Taekwondo students. “The UC Davis Open got us ready and we have a better idea of what to do at our future tournaments, especially State Championships; so I’m better prepared and happy we went,” said red belt Risha Shetty.
